Installation Of telecom systems

Train signal communication:

Each and every train's movement is observed by a controller at the closest divisional headquarters. A portable telephone that can be easily attached to the overhead  lines that run parallel to the track or connected to the Emergency Telephone plugs provided at every KM in the section where controls are operating through underground cables is also available to the driver or guard. Every train has a portable emergency phone located in the guard's compartment.

Fiber-optic cable network:

To ensure a dependable and noise-free communication, optical fiber cable is installed along the track. Because it connects Railway Telephone Exchange with all of its long-distance, high bandwidth circuits, the OFC network is frequently utilized for railway control communication. Through the railway OFC, the Passenger Reservation System, Unreserved Ticketing System, and Network Freight Operating Management System were transferred.

In Southern Railway distribution of various media for Telecommunication is as follows

1. OFC and RE quad cable in Electrified sections

2. OFC and 4/6 quad cable

3. Only OFC.

4. Railway owned overhead line.

5. Rented overhead line/ channels/ bandwidth from BSNL

Network for Railway Telephones:

The connection between all-important offices, officials, way stations, divisional headquarters, and zonal headquarters is made possible by an internal railway telephone network. Railway OFC, Railway Microwave, and rented BSNL channels serve as standby for the interconnection of railway telephone exchanges.

Network for Railway Microwave Communications

Modern technology is used by the Railway Owned MW network to support the Southern Railway telecom network (Digital Microwave System). The MW network covers all divisional headquarters and is mostly located along the tracks in the following areas: Chennai-Jolarpettai, Erode-Palghat, Chennai-Tiruchchirappalli, and Madurai-Palghat.

System for wireless communication:

The 5 watt hand-held walkie-talkies that are handed to the driver, guard, supervisors and officers of the permanent way, mechanical, electrical, and signal and telecom departments can be used to establish contact between a moving train and nearby stations. A 25 watt VHF set is available in every railroad station for this use.
